After two decades of setbacks, a community center in the nearby 5.9-acre community of Redwood will allow Texas State students to volunteer and assist residents the neighborhood’s residents.
Centro Esperanza Community Center opened June 15 on Poplar Road, sharing a zip code with San Marcos five miles south on the edge of Guadalupe County. Kim Porterfield, Texas State community relations director, said Guadalupe County focuses support on the neighboring city of Seguin, and Redwood does not receive much assistance from San Marcos because it is outside the city limits. Centro Esperanza serves about 4,000 Redwood residents who struggle with poverty and geographic isolation, Porterfield said.
